Morgan Housel on The Psychology of Money

This week?s conversation is with Morgan Housel, a partner at The Collaborative Fund and a former columnist at The Motley Fool and The Wall Street Journal.

He is a two-time winner of the Best in Business Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, winner of the New York Times Sidney Award, and a two-time finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.

Morgan recently published a book titled, The Psychology of Money, and it?s the impetus for why I wanted to talk to him.

If you?ve listened to this podcast for a while, you know I live by this stance: having a philosophy for your life is imperative...

What I hope you take from this conversation is that the same can be said for how you think about money.

There isn?t simply one "right" way to manage your money, but it should align with the greater values you live by.

At one point in our conversation, Morgan shares that he doesn?t have a mortgage on his house, that he owns it outright.

I was a bit stumped at first because it would appear, especially in our current climate with how low interest rates are, that this is foolish.

Isn?t there a huge opportunity cost to that?

But Morgan is clear on his principles, what makes him feel secure, and what?s ?enough? for him... not having to think about a mortgage is something that?s important to him.

So this conversation isn?t focused so much on what to do with your money, but the importance of having clarity on the reasons why you choose to do, what you do, with it.

In this conversation, we discuss how powerful the human mind is ? why we?re uniquely suited to adapt to and overcome adversity and why it?s possible to rewire our brain?s to get a better handle on anxiety and other mental disorders.

Alex Fiance and Ankur Jain on The Factors That Make or Break a Business

This week?s conversation is with Alex Fiance and Ankur Jain, the co-founder?s and co-CEO?s of Kairos.

Kairos is focused on solutions that can help solve the affordability crisis for the everyday consumer.

Alex has been leading Kairos since 2013, transforming the company from its roots as a student-run organization into its current focus on building a family of brands designed to make life more affordable.

Ankur launched Kairos in 2008 as a talent incubator and has been recognized for a variety of achievements including the Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2017.

You may remember Alex from the mini-series we did a few years ago called ?The Process? where we learned about young entrepreneurs tackling some of the world?s biggest problems.

Considering how many people are struggling to get by right now, I thought this would be a timely moment to have Alex back on, along with Ankur.

I wanted them to catch us up to speed? What progress they have made? And how have they adjusted where they were wrong?

Alex was early on the journey when we first chatted and now he?s earning his stripes?

One of the companies we discussed during ?The Process? called Rhino just announced they raised $95 million, valuing the company at just under $500 million?. a huge milestone for Kairos.

In this conversation, we discuss the affordability crisis, the factors that can make or break a business, and what role luck plays in all of this.

Jimmy Chin on Shifting Your Perspective of What's Possible

This week?s conversation is with Jimmy Chin, an Academy Award winning filmmaker, National Geographic photographer and professional mountain sports athlete.

He has led or participated in cutting edge expeditions around the world for over 20 years.

Jimmy has climbed and skied Mount Everest from the summit and made significant first ascents on all seven continents including the coveted first ascent of the Shark?s Fin on Mount Meru.

For those of you unfamiliar with Meru, it?s the sacred five-peaked mountain of Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist cosmology and is considered to be the center of all the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes.

Jimmy?s photographs have graced numerous covers of National Geographic Magazine and the New York Times Magazine.

He co-produces and co-directs with his wife Chai Vasarhelyi.

Their film Meru won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and was on the 2016 Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature.

Their latest documentary Free Solo, featuring Alex Honnold, won a BAFTA, seven primetime Emmys and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.

Jimmy?s resume precedes itself? I?d been wanting to have this conversation for a long time and I can?t wait for you to learn from him.

We talk about his unorthodox path to becoming a photographer and filmmaker, chasing dreams, and managing risk.We also discuss why he almost turned down making ?Free Solo? which I think you?ll find captivating?

Alexi Pappas on Overcoming Depression and Improving Mental Health

This week?s conversation is with Alexi Pappas, an Olympic runner and an award-winning actor and writer.

A Greek-American, Alexi is the Greek national record holder in the 10,000 meters.

She graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and also ran for the University of Oregon as a 5th year, leading the team to two NCAA victories.

Alexi has been profiled on the cover of the New York Times Sports Page, in Rolling Stone, on NPR's All Things Considered, and was also featured on the cover of Runner's World Magazine's 50th anniversary issu, named as one of the two faces of the "new boom" in running.

Her memoir-in-essays, "Bravey," with a foreword by Maya Rudolph was just released ? and it?s the reason I wanted to have this conversation.

Now more than ever ? mental health is at the forefront of what so many of us are dealing with.

My hope is that Alexi?s story ? one of overcoming depression and seeing a grander version of what her future could look like can help you or a loved one get through any challenges of your own.

This is not an easy time... but maybe? this conversation inspires you, that you have more inside you, and reminds you that you?re not alone in this.

Henry Fraser on Acceptance, Resiliency, and Gratitude

This week?s conversation is with Henry Fraser, a talented artist, who paints stunning landscapes, animals, portraits, and more.

There?s one caveat -- he draws using his mouth, as an accident years ago left him paralysed from the neck down.

So that would beg the question, how did he learn to paint?

He began by using a stylus on his iPad, which he held using his mouth to draw.

He then taught himself to use a pencil, and then paint, by fixing the utensils required a stick attached to his mouth.

Henry is also an author ? he wrote The Little Big Things, which won Non Fiction Book Of The Year by WHSmith.

Losing your ability to move from the shoulders down at age 17 ? that?s up there with the most difficult circumstances I can imagine someone having to deal with.

So with that context, I think you can get an idea of why I wanted to speak with Henry.

This conversation is about acceptance, resiliency, and gratitude.

It?s about making the best of a situation, no matter how bad things seem on the surface.

Owen Eastwood on Creating the Optimal Environment for People to Thrive

This week?s conversation is with Owen Eastwood, a Performance Coach engaged by high profile teams around the world hunting for a competitive advantage through their culture.

He currently works with the British Olympic and English football teams and has previously worked with diverse teams such as the Command Group of NATO, the South African cricket team, corporate leadership teams and in elite ballet.

Owen?s a New Zealander with a unique approach based on an evolutionary understanding of what makes teams of humans strong and weak.

There are some incredible insights and some wonderful ancient wisdoms that we have stopped listening to and Owen?s mission is to re-introduce people to those ideas.

He introduced me to a concept I love called ?Whakapapa? ? something the famous New Zealand men?s national rugby union team, commonly known as the All Blacks, has built their culture around.

Essentially the shirt is more important than any individual.

You wear the shirt with a sense of pride and a sense of duty.

And then you pass it on, along with the stories, the values, the rituals and tradition, to those who come after you? and that?s something we dive into in this conversation.

James Clear on Building Meaningful, Sustainable Habits

This week?s conversation is with James Clear, a writer and speaker focused on habits, decision-making, and continuous improvement.

He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Atomic Habits.

His work has appeared in Entrepreneur magazine, Time magazine, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and on CBS This Morning.

So why do habits matter?

We all have tons of habits, things like signing your name or knocking on the door, ringing the doorbell, tying your shoes or unplugging the toaster after each use... but how do we build more important or meaningful routines around things that really matter to us?

For James, it starts with choosing what you want to optimize for and the type of identity that you want to reinforce, the type of person you want to become.

So in this conversation, we dive into some best practices for habit development and how to create a system that is organized toward the outcome you desire.

Lauryn and Michael Bosstick on Refusing to Settle - Personally and Professionally

This week?s conversation is unique ? it?s with Lauryn Evarts Bosstick and Michael Bosstick, our first husband and wife duo on Finding Mastery and it definitely doesn?t disappoint!

Lauryn and Michael host a top podcast called The Skinny Confidential: HIM & HER

Before they had the podcast, Lauryn simply had a passion for beauty, wellness and no-censor advice.

It all started as a small blog and today their podcast, The Skinny Confidential: HIM & HER, has over 75 million downloads.

I?ve had the pleasure of being a guest on their podcast twice ? you can check out my latest episode here.

So this time, we decided to turn the mic?s on them and in my opinion the timing couldn?t be more perfect.

Lauryn just had a baby, Michael is running a rapidly growing business and they?re stuck at home just like the rest of us.

We talk about how to maintain a healthy relationship with a significant other ? especially during times like this and how to turn your passion into something that can actually be a revenue generator.

Decoding Disruptors: Race Forward

The events of this summer plunged us into a period of racial reckoning and soul searching. Waves of protests and demonstrations across the globe pushed race to the center of our social discourse. People are hopeful that this complex, fraught moment is the beginning of a real meaningful movement towards racial equality.

But change starts within. The beliefs, attitudes, and stories that we carry shape the lens through which we see other, and ourselves. I had a series of conversations with friends inside out community who are deeply engaged in the struggle for racial equality. The purpose -- to explore how we can build the internal skillsets to create the change we want to see in the world.

I?m honored to be doing special episode of the Finding Mastery podcast in partnership with Microsoft. I hope you appreciate the lived experiences and applied insights of these remarkable leaders as much as I do.

In Donald's words: ?I?m deeply convinced that everything that I've been taught is probably largely wrong. Everything that I believed is probably largely wrong. One of the big, big things that I have to work on as a person is to be good with that, to be good with not knowing and to face the fundamental and profound ignorance that's part of the human condition.?

Wes Pfiffner on Why Light Exposure is Fundamental to Wellbeing

This week?s conversation is with Wes Pfiffner, a member of Joovv?s leadership team.

Joovv is the first company to develop a modular, full-body light therapy for personal, in-home use.

So why am I so interested in light therapy?

You probably know that UV light from the sun helps us create Vitamin D, but other colors and wavelengths of sunlight are crucial for our health as well, like red light and near-infrared light.

I?ve been hooked on Joovv for a while and I wanted to have Wes on to take a deeper dive into their technology and how it can make a difference for you.

In this conversation, Wes breaks down the basics of light and how it works on a cellular level, leading to some commonly known (and some not so common!) ways healthy light exposure optimizes health, and why you should prioritize this therapy the same way you do diet and exercise.

Joovv also just launched their next generation of devices ? you can learn more and take advantage of an exclusive offer at Joovv.com/findingmastery.

In this conversation, we talk about strategies for improving focus and getting the most out of each day.

For Pedram, it comes down to prioritizing what's most important and implementing a practice of life gardening.

You get a certain amount of plants. You say you want them watered. You say they're important to you. How is the allocation of your water?

Jill Ellis on The Pressure of Coaching the U.S. women's national soccer team

This week?s conversation is with Jill Ellis, the former head coach of the U.S Women?s National Team.

Jill is the all-time winningest coach in U.S. Soccer History. She led the team to World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019 and was twice named FIFA World Coach of the Year.

She completed her time with the National Team with a record of 106 wins, 7 losses, and 19 ties.

Previous to the National Team, she was the head coach of the women?s soccer team at UCLA for 12 years.

A few weeks back I had the fortune of speaking with one of Jill?s former players, Becky Sauerbrunn, who mentioned the inherent pressure that comes with playing on the National Team.

There are so many highly talented individuals vying for so few spots. Competition for playing time is through the roof. There is constant pressure to win.

I wanted to speak with Jill to better understand their culture and her process for managing ? especially when the culture gets tested.

Rich Roll on Overcoming the Uncertainty of 2020

This week?s conversation is with Rich Roll ? if you?ve listened to Finding Mastery for a while you know the name ? this is his third time on the podcast and he?s someone I just love getting a chance to chat with.

For those of you unfamiliar with Rich, he was named one of the ?25 Fittest Men in the World? by Men?s Fitness and ?The World?s Fittest Vegan? by Men?s Health.

Rich is a globally renown ultra-endurance athlete, wellness advocate, bestselling author, husband and father of four.

When he isn?t lost on a trail or spending time with his wife Julie, their four children and two Great Pyrenees, he hosts the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, one of the top 100 podcasts in the world.Rich also has a new book coming out titled, Voicing Change, set for release in November 2020.

It felt very timely to speak with Rich again ? he knows what rock-bottom feels like and he found a way to put his life back together.

With how much current uncertainty there is in the world, I wanted to get a feel for how he?s approaching this year ? specifically what his past experiences have taught him about how to respond when things feel like they're collapsing from all sides.

This week?s conversation is with NASCAR champion, Kurt Busch.

In 2019, Kurt made the move to Chip Ganassi Racing to become the driver of the No. 1 Monster Energy Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Kurt has more than 650 career starts in the MENCS spanning over 21 years of competition.

In addition to being the 2004 MENCS Champion, he also has marquee wins in the NASCAR All-Star race, Coca-Cola 600 (2010) and the Daytona 500 (2017).

Kurt is a fierce competitor and his resume speaks for itself? he understands what it takes to win.

In this conversation, Kurt shares how that same mentality that propelled him to countless victories also almost derailed his career.

We discuss the importance of relationships and how evolving his approach ? from transactional to transformational ? has reinvigorated him in the second half of his career.

Kurt also describes what it?s like inside a race car traveling at 200mph.

The level of focus required is intense ? and recovering from a 3-hour race is no joke.

Becky Sauerbrunn on The Fleeting Nature of Flow State

This week?s conversation is with Becky Sauerbrunn, an American soccer player, Olympic gold medalist and two time FIFA Women's World Cup champion.

A veteran defender for the United States women's national soccer team, she also plays for the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League, the highest division of women's soccer in the United States.

Becky is a 4-time NWSL Defender of the Year and 7-time NWSL First XI selection.

In this conversation, Becky shares what?s it?s like to be at her best? which she describes as fleeting.

It?s those moments where everything slows down and she can see the play happening before it actually happens? every decision she makes is the right ? and she?s completely present.

Those moments are elusive though and so we unpack what gets in her way.

Randy Jackson on The "It" Factor

This week?s conversation is with Randy Jackson, a world-renowned musician, record producer, A&R executive, and founder of Unify Health Labs.

You might be familiar with Randy as one of the judges of the wildly popular ?American Idol? but Randy?s roots in the music industry go way back.

Randy first entered the music industry in the ?80s as a for-hire studio session bassist.

His skill, easy-going personality, and never-say-die work ethic saw him appearing on stages and records with world-famous acts like Journey, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny G, Aretha Franklin, Maze, Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, and Tracy Chapman.

He soon made the transition to the production end, working first in mixing and eventually full production.

The list of artists he produced include NSYNC, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, and Fergie.

So Randy gets it ? he?s been fortunate to work with the best.

In this conversation, we discuss the ?it? factor ? the common trait shared by the best musicians, entertainers and beyond.

This episode is focused on what actually shapes behavior ? just because someone has the knowledge that something is bad for them doesn?t mean they?ll actually stop doing that? so why is that?

Cal Ripken Jr. on Why You Control Your Life?s Narrative

This week?s conversation is with Cal Ripken Jr., baseball?s all-time Iron Man.

Cal retired from baseball in October, 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.

Although he began and finished his career at third base, Cal is still best known for redefining the position of shortstop.

On July 29, 2007 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Cal received the 4th highest percentage of votes in history, collecting the second highest vote total ever by the BBWAA.

His name appears in the record books repeatedly ? he?s one of only eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and 3,000 hits.

But most notably Cal broke Lou Gehrig?s Major League record for consecutive games played (2,130) playing 2,632 consecutive games before he voluntarily ended the streak.

Think about that for a second ? that?s 16 years straight without missing a game.

Imagine not missing a day of work for 16 years? imagine the willpower, the mental fortitude required to keep at it.

We get into that in this conversation.

Cal shares some amazing stories from his career to help illustrate what was really going through his mind during ?The Streak,? why he had such a high standard of excellence and cared so deeply about playing the game the right way.

We touch on focus, resiliency, motivation, pressure and more?

Blake Mycoskie on Why External Validation Isn't The Answer

This week's conversation is with Blake Mycoskie, a social entrepreneur and the founder of TOMS.

Blake started TOMS in 2006 and revolutionized the way companies give back by giving shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased.

With all his focus going to TOMS, Blake realized he stopped taking care of himself and was diagnosed with mild depression.

With this diagnoses, he began exploring how he could better show up for himself and others and that ultimately led to his newest venture, Madefor, where he?s helping people gain control of their lives.

We cover so much in this conversation.

Blake shares how he got started in entrepreneurship, what?s been key to his success, and why his initial concept of success proved to be offbase.

The external factors, the money, the fame, the status all came with Blake?s business accomplishments but when he got everything he was chasing, he realized it wasn?t what he was actually interested in.

My hope is that if you only take one thing from this conversation, it?s that none of us have it all figured out, no matter how successful we may appear on the outside.

If you?re not familiar with the role of the left tackle, it?s one of the most important positions on the field, responsible for protecting the ?blind side? of the quarterback.

These are big men.

Duane is about 6?3?, 315 lbs.

This conversation is about what life is like for Duane when he?s not on the field.

It?s easy to judge a book by its cover and in Duane?s case, he?s gone through life being judged by both his size and his skin color.

The conversations I enjoy most on this podcast are when the guest is willing to turn off their ?marketing mind? and let us in? to really understand what?s at the center of their world.

Duane does just that? he opens up about his experiences as a child and why there were times when he felt his ?light was dimmed? because it was easier to be accepted that way.

Two of them were number one on the list and one was picked by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of the year.

Shea is also known for his work with the sports and pop culture websites, The Ringer and Grantland.

This conversation is as real as it gets.

Pete Carroll and Michael Gervais on Living and Leading Authentically

This week?s conversation is with Pete Carroll, the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and my business partner at Compete to Create.

In this conversation, we decided to do something different -- we flipped the model a bit and for good reason.

I'm incredibly excited to share that my first book, an Audible Original, is coming out on July 9th, titled: Compete to Create: An Approach to Living and Leading Authentically.

I couldn?t be more honored to co-write it with Pete Carroll.

So what?s different about this conversation?

Beyond being overwhelmingly excited to announce our Audible Original release, we invited Sage Steele, ESPN SportsCenter host and recent Finding Mastery guest, to interview both Pete and myself.

We discuss how we first got started working together, what we?ve come to learn about helping others explore their potential, and why we wanted to write a book together.

Our new Audible Original offers an in-depth look at how world-class athletes, artists, entrepreneurs and top business leaders organize their inner lives to explore the edges of their potential ? and at the same time live life with purpose and meaning.

This book is about celebrating the insights and practices that are at the center of human flourishing.

We pull back the curtain and reveal the psychological framework and mental skills that are common to great performers and leaders and show you how you can apply those same principles and practices to all areas of your life.

If you?ve already taken our online course Finding Your Best, this will be a great companion to your growth-arc.

I?d be honored if you?d pre-order it at audible.com/competetocreate.

If you know there is more inside you to discover?more to contribute, more room to grow?I think we found the sweet spot between applied science, incredible stories and crystal clear ways you can train your mind and organize your inner life to, quite simply, live and lead authentically.

If you're a fan of action sports, you know the name.

By four years old, Travis was already riding a one-speed motorcycle.

At the age of 14, he won the world freestyle championship.

Travis continued to display his versatility into the early 2000's racking up numerous Supercross and Motocross podiums as well a Motocross of Nations Championship title.

In 2001, Travis was awarded Motocross Rider of the Year at the ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards.

As one of the founders and ringleader of Nitro Circus, Travis is committed to the progression of action sports as a whole and has set his sights on redefining the sport of rallycross with the evolution of Nitro Rallycross.

Soledad O'Brien on Standing Up to Racism

This week?s conversation is with Soledad O?Brien, an award-winning documentarian, journalist, speaker, author and philanthropist.

She is dedicated to telling empowering and authentic stories on a range of social issues.

Soledad currently anchors and produces the Hearst Television political magazine program ?Matter of Fact with Soledad O?Brien? and she also reports regularly for HBO?s ?Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.?

She has anchored shows on CNN, MSNBC and NBC, and hosted projects for Fox and A&E.

At CNN, she was the face of CNN?s morning news shows for many years and a frequent reporter and analyst for breaking news stories and election coverage.

She also anchored the CNN documentary unit, where she created the ?In America? documentary series, which includes ?Black in America? and ?Latino in America.?

Soledad was recognized with three Emmy awards -- for her coverage of the Haiti earthquake, the 2012 election and a series called ?Kids and Race.?

So Soledad?s resume speaks for itself-- she has a deep regard for her craft and more importantly: separating right from wrong.

On the surface, this movement, these protests, they?re about highlighting the injustices, the police brutality that many African-Americans have been prone to for far too long.

But it extends further than that.

This conversation is about accountability... we all play a role.

Michael Bennett on Why It's Time for America to Look in the Mirror

This week?s conversation is with Michael Bennett, a defensive end in the National Football League.

Michael signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and was an instrumental member of the 2013 team that won the Super Bowl. He's also a 3x Pro-Bowler.

While Michael?s craft is football, there is so much more to Michael the human being.

He?s an advocate for social justice and after the events of the last week and the ongoing protests, I wanted to have him on the podcast to more than anything else just ? listen.

Michael?s words are significant. He has much to share. But what I found even more powerful than his words was his tone.

He doesn?t once raise his voice, he doesn?t blame others, yet you can hear the pain in his voice. You can hear the yearning for change; for a different America.

We discuss the systemic issues that make everyday life difficult for African-Americans and what each of us can do to make a positive impact going forward.

This is an incredibly difficult, yet important time for our country.

I recognize that change requires action and solely talking about it will not suffice.

At the same time, I hope that we can use this platform to continue to learn, to better understand, and to empathize with those who have felt silenced for so long.

Dr. Melanie Joy on Cultivating Healthy Relationships

This week?s conversation is with Dr. Melanie Joy, a Harvard-educated psychologist specializing in relationships, communication, and social change.

Melanie is best known for her groundbreaking theories on the psychology of violence, nonviolence, and building healthy relationships.

Her analyses have helped explain why people engage in ?nonrelational? behaviors?behaviors that harm other people, animals, the planet, and themselves?as well as how to change this pattern

She is the eighth recipient of the Ahimsa Award?previously given to the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela?for her work on global nonviolence; and she also received both the Peter Singer Prize and the Empty Cages Prize for her work developing strategies to reduce the suffering of animals.

Melanie?s mission is to raise awareness of the obstacles preventing people from interacting in ways that create a sense of mutual connection.

These obstacles are both internal (psychological) and external (social), and they are a key reason why we act against our own interests and the interests of others?often without realizing that we?re doing so.

With awareness, we are better able to think freely and act compassionately, to create healthier and more fulfilling relationships and a more equitable and sustainable world.

Deepak is the founder of The Chopra Foundation, a non-profit entity for research on well-being and humanitarianism, and Chopra Global, a modern-day health company at the intersection of science and spirituality

TIME magazine has described Deepak as ?one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century.?

Dr. David Fajgenbaum on Living with Urgency ?Why Tomorrow Isn't Promised

This week?s conversation is with Dr. David Fajgenbaum, a groundbreaking physician-scientist and disease hunter.

The timing of his insights is incredibly relevant for us right now.

David is best known as the ?doctor who cured himself? ? he received his last rites while in medical school and nearly died four more times battling Castleman disease.

To try to save his own life, he spearheaded an innovative approach to research through the Castleman Disease Collaborative Network and discovered a treatment that has put him into his longest remission ever.

Now, he is spreading this approach to other diseases like COVID19.

David is also one of the youngest individuals ever appointed to the faculty at Penn Medicine and the top 1 percent youngest grant awardees of a highly-competitive National Institute?s of Health grant.

As someone who?s been on the verge of death multiple times, David has a unique perspective? he shares how it?s altered his approach to life.

David likes to refer to it as playing in ?overtime.?

In his words:

I?ve been in overtime ever since I had my last rights read to me. Think about overtime in sports. In overtime, all of a sudden there's this incredible clarity and purpose that comes with every tick of the clock. You can make a mistake in the first quarter of a game and you can make up for it, but if you make one wrong move in overtime the game's over. And I think that's the perfect analogy for how I feel every day of life. It?s not that I'm afraid to make a mistake or a paralyzing feeling, but it actually gives me clarity. I can hear the clock ticking, I know that I have this awful disease, but it helps me to focus on what's important and what's not important.

And that really sets the tone for this conversation.

We discuss the preciousness of life and why it really comes down to having clarity of purpose and making sure you take the proper actions to back it up.

David also shares how his lab is approaching finding a cure for COVID-19.

Decoding Disruptors: Leaders Navigating the Unfolding, Unpredictable Unknown

We are in a unique moment in world history. From the devastating loss of life to the financial fallout to the closing of borders, businesses, industries and schools, we are collectively confronted by a reality few of us could have ever imagined.

Decision-making leans on precedents and guiding principles, but how do leaders react when there are no precedents to follow?

I had a series of conversations with friends inside our community to better understand the approach of those who effectively lead during moments of great stress, strain and uncertainty. I wanted to distill insights about leadership while we are still in the middle of the crisis, while it?s raw.

During crisis, leaders are called upon to rely on their preparation, respond in the moment, and locate the opportunity in a future that has not yet arrived. And they have to do these all at once with limited information and the well-being of others hanging in the balance.

I?m honored to be doing this project in partnership with Microsoft and Compete to Create. We hope you appreciate the applied insights of these leaders as much as we do.

George Karl on Getting to The Truth

This week?s conversation is with George Karl, the 6th winningest coach in NBA basketball history.

George coached the Cavs, Warriors, Sonics, Bucks, Nuggets and Kings over the span of 1,999 NBA games.

He was also an All American player in college at the University of North Carolina and played in the ABA for the San Antonio Spurs.

At UNC, George had the fortune of being mentored by the late Dean Smith and was surrounded by other brilliant basketball minds who helped shape his coaching philosophy.

George has never been one to hold back and the same can be said for this conversation.

He has some amazing stories to share, including his experiences coaching future Hall of Famer?s Ray Allen and Carmelo Anthony and what it was like going up against Michael Jordan in the NBA Finals.

We talk success, we talk failure, and we discuss why finding purpose in his post-coaching life has been challenging.

Beyond basketball, George is a three-time cancer survivor so he?s a fighter, he?s resilient by nature.

Trent Dilfer on Turning Pain Into Passion

This week?s conversation is with Trent Dilfer, a 14 year NFL veteran and Super Bowl Champion.

Trent played for five teams during his career, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers.

He led the Ravens to a 34-7 victory over the Giants in Super Bowl XXXV (35).

Trent has now made it his mission in life to ?give back? and has become a positive role model, coach and mentor for upcoming High School Quarterbacks through Elite 11 where he?s had the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and wisdom of the quarterbacking position to the next generation of future College and NFL Players.

Trent and I met at Elite 11 and that?s where I got to learn about how special a human being he is.

In this conversation we discuss Trent?s journey to the NFL, what he?s learned about himself along the way, and how that ultimately led him to coaching high school football ? where he?s currently the head football coach at the Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee.

And while Trent is well known for his work on the football field, this conversation is really about who Trent is as a man off it.

Sage Steele on Choosing Happiness

This week?s conversation is with Sage Steele, one of ESPN?s most popular and respected commentators.

Sage joined ESPN in 2007 and currently serves as the co-anchor for ESPN?s flagship show, SportsCenter, weekdays at 6 p.m. ET.

She has served as the lead host for SportsCenter on the Road, since 2016, a role that includes on-site, day-long and pre-event coverage for the biggest sports events of the year, such as the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the World Series, the Masters, the College Football National Championship and many more.

Sage also hosted NBA Countdown on ESPN and ABC from 2013-2017.

This is an incredibly powerful conversation.

I really wasn?t expecting to go to the places we went but I was so appreciative we did ? Sage opens up about her personal life and the difficult yet necessary decisions she?s had to make.

As Sage puts it: the most important mental skill is having the courage to speak your truth? and for that matter live your truth.

The beautiful thing about this is when you can live this way, there?s amazing freedom that comes with it.
