Buddhism Guide

This podcast is pragmatic, secular and makes complicated Buddhist principles easy to understand. Yeshe is a Buddhist monk. He is from England and teaches meditation, Buddhist philosophy and mindfulness. Yeshe spent several years in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas teaching young monks basic Buddhist philosophy and meditation. He now offers teachings freely to all in a manner that is unpretentious and clear. He does not demand students to blindly accept what he says, but instead invites them to examine their own minds and experiences to discover the validity of Gautama Buddha?s teachings. Yeshe quietly demonstrates Gautama Buddha?s teaching on compassion through the charitable trust ?Sangye Menla? that he founded in 2008 in Chandigarh, Northern India. The trust provides medical assistance and care to people from the Himalayan region in India.

From Perception to Action

In Buddhism, there are five omnipresent mental factors. These factors are present in every moment of our mental experience and play a fundamental role in shaping our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Understanding these factors can help us cultivate mindfulness and develop a deeper awareness of our own minds. Unraveling the Mind for a Deeper Understanding

In both Buddhism and neuroscience, the concepts of brain, mind, and consciousness play vital roles in understanding human existence and awareness. While Buddhism offers a philosophical and spiritual perspective, neuroscience approaches these concepts from a scientific and empirical standpoint. Secular Buddhism: Bridging Eastern Wisdom and Western Minds

Buddhism, originating in ancient India, has traversed continents and centuries, touching the lives of millions. As it spread to the West, it underwent adaptations to resonate with the Western mindset. One such adaptation that gained popularity is Secular Buddhism. In this podcast, I want to explore the essence of Secular Buddhism, its distinctions from traditional Buddhism, and the reasons behind, what I think, is its appeal to Westerners. The Fluidity Of Reality

The Buddhist concept of emptiness refers to the idea that all things lack intrinsic or inherent existence. It is a way of understanding the nature of reality and the way in which things come into being. By recognising the emptiness of all things, we can let go of our attachment to fixed identities and concepts, leading to greater freedom and compassion. A Path To Peace

Over the years, I have spent a lot of time meditating and reflecting on world peace. I have even wondered if it was even possible. I concluded that it is not only possible, but also essential for humanity. It is complicated, multifaceted and requires cooperation, but it is achievable. World peace is important because it is the foundation for global prosperity, stability, and security. Without peace, individuals, communities, and nations are vulnerable to conflict, violence, and instability. War and conflict result in the loss of human lives, destruction of infrastructure, displacement of populations, and economic devastation, which can have long-lasting and far-reaching effects. In contrast, peace promotes cooperation, understanding, and respect for human rights, and creates an environment where individuals and societies can thrive and reach their full potential. World peace is essential for achieving sustainable development, promoting social justice, and ensuring a better future for all. After deliberating, I have identified these six points that I believe could pave the way towards peace. Mangala Sutra - Part Nine

Impermanence is one of the most important topics Buddha taught. He stated that there is no phenomenon that exists from its own side?that is, there are no phenomena that are not compounded. Things do not just come into existence by sheer magic or by some superior power, such as a god. It is through causes and conditions, the joining together of things, that phenomena come into existence. Mangala Sutra - Part Eight

I have mentioned various ways of reducing our suffering throughout this series on the Mangala Sutra, so now I want to discuss things that may stop us from reducing our suffering, namely, the ten fetters. Mangala Sutra - Part Three

In this third part of the Mangala Sutra, we will look at the Social Principles. These social principles take us further into our journey of becoming more responsible and reducing our mental suffering. By implementing these principles, we will also be reducing the suffering of those around us. This is not a selfish journey; it is one that helps us gain compassion for others. But gaining compassion isn?t enough. We have to reflect on the principles and put what we learn into practice. So, these following principles cover why generosity is important, how we can practice virtuous actions, support our family and friends, and how to live a blameless life. Mangala Sutra - Part One

For centuries people have been indulging in superstitions, lucky charms, omens, divinations, and fortune-telling. They have used these things to help them make decisions and keep them from taking responsibility for their own actions. Buddha called all of these practices ?low art?, and on many occasions he stated that such things are of no use as we have to take responsibility for our own lives. This point was made very clear in the Mangala Sutra. In this discourse, Buddha was asked what the most auspicious omens were, and which ones should be followed. He didn?t directly answer the question, but instead gave guidelines of how we can make our own lives auspicious without relying on outside omens. He spoke about thirty-eight principles that, if lived by, would bring us true protection. The Twelve Links of Dependent Arising

A central teaching in traditional Buddhism is the principle of dependent arising, which states that all things happen through cause and conditions and that they are interdependent. No phenomenon, whether outer or inner, occurs except as a reaction to a previous cause, and all phenomenon will, in turn, condition the following results. So, in a nutshell, because of one thing something else arises. Nothing in this world arises from its own power. Everything comes through causes and conditions. Are We Born with Compassion?

It is my understanding that we are born with compassion as part of our survival instincts, which means compassion is essential to human relationships and to help humanity. The problem is these days we spend an awful lot of our day in the fight or flight mode, and this blocks our compassion. This is because we are stressed and under pressure for large parts of the day and the brain sees this as a threat. It is difficult for us to be compassionate if our brains are focused on survival. Though compassion is innate it does not always come easily. Here are seven ways to help build your compassion. Building Your Emotional Strength

When we are faced with challenging obstacles, we all cope in different ways, some face them head on, whereas others buckle under the pressure. It's important for us to find ways to build up our emotional strength. What is emotional strength? It?s a type of response when reacting to emotional events in an open and vulnerable way, which allows us to find ways of dealing with the emotion and not getting all tangled up in it. Do you have emotional strength? Eliminate What is Holding You Back

The more we get caught up in negative patterns of behaviour and mental states, the more they become engrained. This means they become stored in our subconscious, and we act in certain ways without consciously thinking and we become overwhelmed by our mental states, such as anger, jealousy, pride, without noticing it. We can start to change by following the process I have called ?Eliminate what is holding you back.? This consists of seven steps, which are realisation, study, conviction, determination, action, effort, and time. Appreciating What We Have

We human beings tend to focus on what we want or what we don?t want, but very rarely take time to appreciate what we have. Conscious gratitude is a simple way for us to count our blessings, build relationships and help strengthen our mental and physical wellbeing. Gratitude is an attitude. Gratitude is a choice. And gratitude is a habit. When we consciously practice being grateful for what we have we begin to strengthen our mental wellbeing. A Lust for Life

Lust is the strong, passionate desire for something, and not only sex, but also, food, drink, money, fame, power, knowledge and so on. It is a biological impulse without which you would not have been born in the first place. Our purpose in life is to survive, that is how our brains are wired. So, seeing lust as something bad is not helpful. I believe what is important is how you act upon your lust. Making Friends with Your Emotions

What we usually do is try to fight against our strong emotions, suppress them or get totally tangled up in them. None of these are going to be helpful. The more we fight against the emotion, the stronger it becomes. Acting this way, we will eventually make the emotion into our enemy. But emotions are not our enemies, they are our teachers. They don?t just suddenly appear for no reason. They come to inform us that something is happening, and we need to deal with it. Karma isn't some magical or mystical thing handed out by some higher being. It is simply patterns of behaviour. Sense Of Self - The Buddha Dharma Series

In Buddhism, one of the most difficult teachings for people to understand is anatman or non-self. The doctrine states that in humans there is no permanent entity that can be called a self or a soul. This denial of ?any Soul or Self? is what distinguishes Buddhism from other major religions, such as Christianity and Hinduism, and gives Buddhism its uniqueness. This sense of being a permanent, solid, autonomous self is an illusion. The problem is this illusion is so ingrained into our ordinary experience. We have a sense of a permanent, individual self, but that is all it is, a sense, a feeling. Four Immeasurables: Open Hearted Joy - The Buddha Dharma Series

The fourth immeasurable is open-hearted joy. What we are appreciating is the happiness someone else is experiencing. With this quality we feel real joy at their happiness. This practice is the perfect antidote for envy and it deals a killer blow to jealousy and pride. Happiness is fleeting, so to begrudge what little joy people can find in their lives is a very unkind quality. What we need to do is rejoice when happiness comes another?s way. Four Immeasurables: Compassion - The Buddha Dharma Series

Compassion is the third of the four immeasurables and it is an understanding that the world is full of suffering, and a heartfelt wish that this suffering will come to an end or at least lessen?for ourselves and others. Through compassion, the fact that everyone is suffering remains vivid in our minds. Everyone is suffering, so everyone deserves it. Keep in mind that compassion is for the person and not their behaviour. If we think like this, we will be able to cultivate compassion for all human beings. Four Immeasurables: Kind - Heartedness -The Buddha Dharma Series

The second of the four immeasurables is kind-heartedness. This is not about how we feel, but about how we relate to these feelings. It invites us to drop our habitual patterns of reactivity and to free ourselves from emotional habits which serve neither ourselves nor anyone else. Sometimes our goodwill only covers people that are useful, pleasing or amusing to us. This is not how we should divide groups of people; we have to see people through the eyes of kindness. We must open our hearts to everyone. Not every thought radiates kindness to others, so how can we cultivate kind-heartedness? A great place to start is by listening to this podcast and doing the meditation. Four Immeasurables: Equanimity - The Buddha Dharma Series

When we look at the world, we can clearly see how hard it is to attain a balanced mind, as we are continuously in a flux of rises and falls. These lift us up one moment and fling us down the next. This is true for everyone; we are all the same. So, if that is the case, why do we discriminate against others? We are all in the same boat, all trying our best to ride the same waves of life. Equanimity is where we do not distinguish between our friends, the people we dislike or strangers, but regard everyone as equal. What we are trying to do here is remove the boundaries between ourselves and others by discarding our discriminations. Eight Worldly Concerns - The Buddha Dharma Series

We all have concerns and this is just part of being human. But there are eight concerns that bring us unnecessary suffering because we become attached to them or are adverse to them. The ones we call desirable are gain, status, praise and pleasure. The four we call undesirables being loss, insignificance, blame and pain. It doesn?t matter if we see them as desirable or undesirable, they are all ultimately causes of our suffering. Seeing Clearly - The Buddha Dharma Series

In the fourth truth, he explained what path we can take to start the process of destroying the three poisons. This path is known as the eightfold path. This path is not a religious path and doesn?t require rituals, prayers, ceremonies, or even for you to become a Buddhist. It can be looked upon as a path that leads to us living a responsible life and so anybody can practise it. So, it isn?t a Buddhist practice, it is more of a lifestyle practice. The Causes Of Suffering - The Buddha Dharma Series

The first noble truth describes how life has suffering running through it and in the second truth Buddha gave some of the reasons for this suffering. There is not just one cause of our suffering, as there is not one cause of anything. Things come into being through a series of causes and conditions, and that is the same for our suffering. However, there are three main things that cause us emotional and psychological suffering, namely, the three poisons. They are clinging desire, anger and aversion and unawareness. The First Noble Truth - The Buddha Dharma Series

Buddha?s first teaching was on the four noble truths, and it still remains the very foundation on which Buddhism is built. It was these four realities that the Buddha came to understand during his meditation under the bodhi tree, and they provide a conceptual framework for all of Buddhist thought. The first reality is ?There is suffering.? The word suffering here means a dissatisfaction, discontentment, an uneasy feeling running through our lives.
